About Us

Young Inspirers of Lucknow have been working as Peer Counselors and Educators since April 1993 and have proved that if given a chance adolescents and youth can conceptualize, organize and conduct innovative and meaningful activities for creating Health and AIDS Awareness in the urban as well as rural areas.

In November 1996 Young Inspirers formed their own NGO which was registered as Indian Institute of Young Inspirers (IIYI). It is an Institute managed by young people.

The Sexuality Education Counseling Research Therapy/Training (SECRT) Unit of Family Planning Association of India (FPA India) HQs has been successfully conducting workshops on “Spearhead Youth Health- Leadership Training for Youth in Sexual and Reproductive Health” at the National as well as Regional level since 1988. In these workshops young people are equipped with necessary knowledge and skills for becoming effective Peer Counselors and Educators.

These workshops on Spearhead Youth Health were conceived and initiated by Dr. Mahinder C. Watsa, former National Head of SECRT- FPA India (HQs). He is presently the All India President of FPA India and Chief Consultant of IIYI, Lucknow.

The idea of forming Young Inspirers was conceived by Manish Kumar a participant during a Workshop on Spearhead Youth Health held in Lucknow in March 1993.

A few selected participants of this workshop were provided further training on presentation skills, communication skills, counseling skills, role play, using audio-visual aids, resource mobilization, leadership skills and management skills. They were also imparted knowledge on various social and health issues including sexual and reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, relationships and eradicating superstitions by Nandini Johri, Counselor, SECRT - FPA India, Lucknow Branch (She is presently the Vice President of IIYI).

This group of volunteers comprising students in the age group 11-24 years was known as the Youth Wing of SECRT unit of FPA India Lucknow Branch and was christened as ''Young Inspirers".

Young Inspirers worked with the support of SECRT- FPA India till October 1996. Besides doing peer group counseling they did innumerable programs in the rural and urban areas for various target groups (visit our photo gallery). The programs included poster competitions, role plays, songs, yatras (journeys), magic shows, exhibitions, workshops and training programs etc. on various issues related to Family Welfare, Sexual & Reproductive Health, HIV/AIDS, Drug Abuse, Relationships etc.

In November 1996 Young Inspirers separated from FPA India and formed their own NGO which was registered as Indian Institute of Young Inspirers ( IIYI)
